Description

Abell 85, also known as CTB 1 or LBN 576, is a supernova rest in Cassiopeia.
I imaged it in dual narrow-band (H-alfa and O-III) during 4 nights in September 2021, with a OSC camera. Notwithstanding the long exposure, the resulting signal from the nebula was dim.

Abell 85 is located about 10000 ly away, and was initially classified by Abell as a planetary nebula, only later it was identified as a supernova remnant. It is a source of radio and X frequencies.

The NASA APOD of 2 October 2022 is reporting an astonishing feature and picture of CTB-1.The orientation of the NASA picture is the same of mine.

Excerpt of NASA APOD comment: "About 10,000 years ago, the supernova that created the nebular remnant CTB 1 not only destroyed a massive star but blasted its newly formed neutron star core - a pulsar - out into the Milky Way (...). Traveling over 1,000 kilometers per second, the pulsar PSR J0002+6216 (J0002 for short) has already left the supernova remnant CTB 1, and is even fast enough to leave our Galaxy. to leave our Galaxy.
